1. Workshop for Under Graduate Architecture Students in Third Year

The workshop for Architecture students is scheduled to be held at IIT Kanpur during June 11-15, 2024. The studio sessions will be held during these dates. The lectures will be conducted on two weekends prior to these dates. The schedule for the same will be announced closer to the dates. The aim of this workshop is to draw the attention of Architecture students towards keeping the earthquake engineering aspects in view while designing their structures. For details about previous workshops please visit http://www.nicee.org/Architecture_Workshop/ . For further details or any queries please contact: Suresh Ailawadi at Tele - 0512 – 259 7749, Fax – 0512 – 259 7794 or Email: asuresh@iitk.ac.in.

2. Inter-School Quiz Competition based on IITK-BMTPC Earthquake Tips 2023-24

The invite for Inter-School Quiz for 2023-24 has been sent to all schools. You may like to respond to the same.

3. Literature Review Workshop for Post Graduate Students

The Annual Workshop for post graduate students pursuing their masters or doctorate degree with thesis in earthquake engineering is scheduled to be held during May 09 – 18, 2024. For further details please visit the website.

4. Open House of NICEE

The open house is held with the aim to enable postgraduate students to conduct literature survey for their thesis related to earthquake engineering issues and interact with the faculty and professionals. The Open House also welcomes professional engineers and architects to help them familiarize themselves with enormous literature available at NICEE on design and construction of safe habitat. The details of the Open House will be promulgated shortly. For further details or any queries please contact : Suresh Ailawadi at Tele - 0512 – 259 7749, Fax – 0512 – 259 7794 or E-mail: asuresh@iitk.ac.in

5. Intimation Regarding Change of Postal Address/ email id

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that we currently have more than 15,400 subscribers on NICEE list. At times we face problem of our mails being blocked by the outside servers with the presumption that we are spamming.

We would therefore like to request you to please do inform us as and when you switch over from one email id to another. We will stop sending mails to your old email id and will subscribe your current email id to nicee-list so that you continue to receive communication from NICEE.

Similarly, it is our earnest request that please do let us know whenever you want us to change your postal address and we will update our records. You may please inform us by sending a mail to nicee@iitk.ac.in.

6. RESIST Software Available for Individual Users

RESIST Software is now available for individual users. A copy of the same can be requested from NICEE on payment of Rs. 2,000/-. This version of RESIST is customized to Indian codes and construction conditions.

However, a more recent update is available with greatly enhanced graphical features but it is based upon New Zealand codes and practices. It may be downloaded free of charge from the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering website at  https://www.nzsee.org.nz/library/other-publications/resist/ .

For further details regarding the earlier version please visit http://www.nicee.org/npeee/showpage.php?id=149 and for any queries please contact: Suresh Ailawadi at Tele - 0512 – 259 7749, Fax – 0512 – 259 7794 or E-mail: asuresh@iitk.ac.in, nicee@iitk.ac.in

Prof. Dipti Ranjan Sahoo awarded 2022 S S Bhatnagar Prize for contribution in Structural/Earthquake Engineering

Prof. Dipti Ranjan Sahoo, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Delhi, has won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology 2022 in Engineering Sciences. Prof. Sahoo graduated from IIT Kanpur with an MTech in 2003 and a PhD in 2008. His doctoral thesis on developing an aluminium shear-yielding damper for enhanced earthquake resistance of structures was supervised by Prof. Durgesh C Rai. At IIT Delhi, Prof. Sahoo continued to work on shear-yielding dampers and other structural fuses for seismic design and mitigation of seismic effects on buildings and bridges which won him the prestigious Science and Technology award.

The Prize bears the name of the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) India, the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding Indian work in science and technology. The Prize is given to a person who, in the opinion of CSIR, has made conspicuously important and outstanding contributions to human knowledge and progress – fundamental and applied – in the particular field of endeavour, which is his/her specialization.

Prof. Sahoo's SSB Prize is also noteworthy because Prof. Jai Krishna of the University of Roorkee (regarded as Father of Earthquake Engineering in India) was the last structural/earthquake engineer to receive this award in 1966!

NICEE congratulates Prof Sahoo on this recognition which also benefitted from his contributions to its various activities as a former IIT Kanpur postgraduate student and later as IIT Delhi faculty member.
