Chapter 5 Miscellaneous
Buildings
In this chapter observations regarding performance of particular building types
classified on the basis of their functional usage is described. Damage to schools,
hospitals, industrial facilities and historical structures is discussed in particular
SCHOOLs
School and college buildings were one of the most seriously affected by the earth-
quake. In many rural areas, these educational buildings had poor construction
and maintenance, and consequently, suffered moderate to heavy damage. Pri-
mary school buildings in villages Koshamghat, Amahinauta, Belkheda etc. are
in
just a few instances of a large number such buildings damaged the quake. In
the city area also many school and college buildings were damaged.
Government Blind, Dumb and Deaf school in Kongwa, on Bheraghat road, suf-
fered extensive damage to its class rooms as well as to its hostel building. RC slab
over the stairwell is seen hanging dangerously in Fig. 5-1, when the supporting
masonry brick walls failed due to out-of-plane loading. The slab was simply rest-
ing on the slender brick masonry wall and there was apparently no connection
between the wall and the roof.
Hostel and school buildings in the Agriculture University on Katni road expe-
rienced moderate to heavy damage. Masonry brick walls collapsed in out-of
to
plane forces as well as cracked severely when subjected in-plane lateral forces.
Construction defects, poor maintenance and absence of earthquake resistant
techniques contributed to the observed damage.
It is really fortunate that the University and colleges were closed for the summer
break otherwise personal injuries and loss of lives could have been substantial.
One casualty was reported from the New Hostel of Agriculture University. In
