Chapter 5 Miscellaneous Buildings

Figure 5-4. Undamaged 12th century Madan Mahal Fort built on a hill.

A few domes and minarets of Chausat Yogini temple in Bheraghat reported to
have dislodged and fallen to ground. Located atop a hillock the structure was
built in the 10th century and has exquisitely carved stone figures of deities of the
Kalchuri period. Similarly, in the Jabalpur city Pisan Hari Jain Temple of 12th
century in Garha area suffered damage to its dome structure. However, tourist
attraction the Madan Mahal fort (Fig. 5-4) and the "balancing rock" appeared to
be unperturbed by the earthquake. The Madan Mahal Fort is built on a hill in
stone masonry by Gond ruler, Raja Madan Shah in 1116 and is a fine example of
the contemporary architecture. This fort was also used as watch tower by sub-
sequent rulers as it dominates the skyline and provides a panoramic view of the
                         town and surroundings.
