Chapter 2 Selsmologlcal Aspects
accelerographs are employed to record acceleration time history at various loca-
tions. This data can be used to study characteristics of strong ground shaking. As
there were no strong motion accelerographs installed in the epicentral region, an
attempt was made to record the duration of perceptible shaking as reported by
various people in different localities and is summarized in Table 2-4. Duration of
strong shaking ranges from 5-30 seconds and one of the conspicuous features is
that there is a significant reduction in the duration of shaking in the localities
lying on hard rock.

Radius of Perceptibility
The radius of perceptibility (ROP) of the Jabalpur earthquake is about 250 km.
The reported ROP of various earthquakes which have occurred in the Peninsular
India are listed in Table 2-5, which varies from 170 km for the Broach earthquake
(M-5.4) to 700 km for Koyna earthquake (M^=6.0). It is evident that the ROP of
the Jabalpur earthquake is much less as compared to ROPs of comparable mag
