To study the relationship of seismicity with the geological structure, Chandra
(1977) divided the Peninsular India into several seismotectonic zones (Fig 2-4)
based on the spatial distribution of instrumentally located earthquakes along
with approximate locations of earthquakes assigned on the basis of the felt
reports. Earthquakes occurring to the North and North-East of India shown in
Fig. 2-4 are attributed to the Himalaya and Burmese thrust zones and are not
related to the seismicity of the Peninsular India. In total thirteen seismic zones
were identified. The North-South trending Panvel seismicity zone and North-
West trending Kutch seismicity zone seems to be seismically most active in com-
