Figure 2-5 depicts the reported epicenters of the earthquakes octurred in the
region around Jabalpur from the period 1903 to 1997, in the grid bounded by Lat-
itude 21°N to 26°N and Longitude 78°E to 85°E, including the epicenter of the
Jabalpur earthquake (1997). The magnitude of the recorded earthquakes in this
region falls in the range of 38 to 6.5. There are six moderate size earthquakes
(5<M<7) and eight small size earthquakes (M<5), which have occurred in this
grid. Out of the 14 reported earthquakes there are two earthquakes having mag-
nitude greater than 6. The above seismotectonic scenario demonstrates that the
Narmada seismic zone is characterized by the moderate earthquake activity in
the magnitude range of 5 to 6.5. The Jabalpur earthquake which have occurred in
