Chapter 2 Seismoiogical Aspects
TRACT II: Ghana-Khamaria-Amakhoh-Kundum-Niwas
The Ghana and Khamaria villages are located about 9 km in the NE of the epicen-
ter. Intensity VII has been assigned to these villages based on the observed pat-
tern of damage. Three persons died in the Ghana village due to collapsing of a
wall and many suffered injuries. The observed pattern of damage in Ghana vil-
lage was by and large similar to that of Kosamghat village but the damage was
less severe. About 90% buildings were damaged in the residential Estate of the
Ordnance Factory, Khamaria (OFK). This resulted in injuries to 65 people and one
death. Filling shop of OFK was severely damaged where as the steel reinforced
building of engineering shop suffered lesser damage and machineries were not
affected. The damage to Ghana and Khamaria can be attributed to the nearby
Pariyat river. Residents of these villages reported general panic, awakening,
mixed sounds like passing of a train, heavy truck etc. and electric power failure
which unabled them to walk or run.
Two reinforced buildings were partially collapsed and severe damage to the
buildings were observed in the Amakhoh village. Roof of a house which was
recently built was displaced about 20 mm towards East. The intensity VIT has
been assigned to this village. Similar type of damage but of lesser degree was
observed in Piparia, Tilsani and Kundum towns. Intensity VT to VI has been
assigned to these villages. In Niwas the earthquake caused frightening and par-
tial awakening and minor cracking of walls, and an intensity V"was given to this
village
TRACT Il: Panagar-Chhattarpur-Sihora-Katni
The intensity VI was assigned to Nibhoratola and Chhattarpur villages which
are situated on alluvium having thickness of about 12-20 m, and are located about
16 km North of the epicenter. The villagers reported that they heard the sound
ike passing of a train or helicopter associated with the earthquake and also saw
red lights in the sky. All the residents of these villages were awakened and fright-
ened and were unable to stand on the ground due to heavy shaking. Most of the
adobe houses were severely damaged and few partially collapsed. Even brick
houses developed wide cracks. Figure 2-8 shows a damaged house in Chhattar
pur village. The roof of this house partially damaged and walls made of brick and
mud were partially collapsed. It was reported that prominent shaking was in
North-South direction and the water from hand pumps became muddy after the
earthquake.
In Panagar, Gosalpur, Umeria and Dhimerkhera villages damages were of lesser
to
degree compared Nibhoratola and Chhattarpur villages and intensity VI" to
as
VI was assigned. The intensity V to V was observed in Shihora, Sleemanabad,
Katni and Banvara towns where people reported partial awakening. frightening
and electric power failure for a short duration at the time of shaking.
