collapsed and the walls suffered severe damage. It was reported that a water
hand pump which was not working due to a deeper water table, began to work
just after the earthquake, however, the water was muddy for about two days.
About 200 m long crack trending in the EW direction was observed in the ground
along the road. Several reasons can be assigned for the observed heavy damage
such as strong shaking, poor quality of construction, deep alluvium formation,
undulating topography of the village and the nearby Gaur river.
In Barela village major cracks were observed in both type A and B houses. Falling
of objects, like TV sets, hanging objects, buckets etc., was reported by villagers
and the dome of a village mosque fell to the ground. The intensity VII was
assigned to this locality. In Bijadandi and Dhanwahi localities, intensity VI'to VI
was assigned based on the nature of cracking (major/minor) which were
observed in the both types of houses (A and B). The roof of a hostel building col-
lapsed in Bijadandi and a resident of this village reported.general awakening,
frightening and anomalous behaviour of animals during the shaking. Intensity
Vto V has been assigned to Tikariya, Devarikala and Majgavan villages. In these
villages minor cracks in houses, partial awakening and frightening to some
