                      Chapter 6

                      TRANSPORTATION

Most of the modern bridges and over-bridges in and around the Jabalpur city
appeared not to be damaged by the earthquake, except one railway bridge across
the river Narmada between Tilwara and Gwarighat. No damage to rail tracks
were reported, however, trains passing through the Jabalpur section were
required to follow a speed restriction of 30 kmph. However, station buildings,
signalling cabins, and outposts at rail-road crossings were damaged on the Bom-
                      bay-Howrah via Allahabad main line.

Concrete Bridge over the Gaur River
A nine-span concrete box girder bridge on the Gaur river near Goraiyaghat on
Mandla Road which was simply supported on concrete piers experienced no
structural damage despite a large amount of shaking in that area (VI) evident
from the damage to buildings (Fig. 6-7). On the deck, there were some indication
that the bridge had experienced some strong shaking as the mortar covering a
running pipe line spalled off at places where girders are supported over the piers.
