Chapter 6
Bilhari Road Bridge
Another small bridge near Bilhari about 6 km from Jabalpur on the Mandla road
had its side earthen banks and flank walls of the abutment damaged.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Phone services disrupted immediately following the earthquake and were later
restored. However, a significant increase in the traffic of phone calls required
additional staff to tackle problems of telephone congestion and overload. A three-
storey telephone exchange building suffered damage to its structure (cracking of
in-filed walls) but it did not affect the operation of the exchange. Electronic
equipment such as main switches and transmission equipment etc. performed
extremely well despite strong shaking as evidenced from structural damage to
housing facilities.
CONCLUsiONS
Lifeline facilities which were constructed in recent times performed satisfactorily.
It should be noted that the Jabalpur earthquake barely subjected these structures
to a desigm level earthquake expected in the region. Modern bridges, aqueducts,
dams, water tanks, electrical and telecommunication equipment did not experi-
ence any noticeable damage barring few exceptions. A rail road bridge anda
water tank in Garha area were two such exceptions.
