INJURIES AND LOSS OF HUMAN LIVES
The loss of human lives inflicted by the Jabalpur earthquake was mostly in the
Jabalpurcity and nearby villages. More than 55 people were reported to have lost
their lives, the details of which are listed in Table 1-1. According to the survey
conducted by the office of District Magistrate and published inNav Bharat, a local
News paper, more than 435 people were injured in the Jabalpur district and about
600 people were injured in adjoining districts (Nav Bharat May 27, 1997). The loss
of human lives due to Jabalpur earthquake was less in spite of a thick population
density in the affected area, because most of the village population in thhe
meizoseismal area were either awake or sleeping outdoors at the time of the
earthquake.
