NUMBER OF HOUSES DAMAGED
The level of damage associated with a moderate size earthquake is usually much
less as compared to the damage observed in the Jabalpur earthquake. This can
primarily be attributed to the proximity of the epicenter, moderately to highly
populated urban areas (178 to 436 persons/hectare), and the poor quality of con-
struction materials and workmanship. In urban areas, about 40 000 houses were
partially damaged and about 6 000 houses were rendered unsafe for living (Nav
Bharat May 25 & 27, 97). Government-owned buildings as well as those built by
private builders suffered maximum damage whereas owner-built houses fared
well. In the Eastland area of the Ordnance Factory, Khamaria, about half of the
total 3 688 residential units were either critically damaged beyond repair (10%) or
suffered major damages to its structural elements. About 400 houses were dam-
aged in the Mandala district and about similar number of houses were damaged
in other adjoining districts like Damoh, Sagar, Narshimhpur and Katni (Nav
Bharat June 2, 97).
